What is Masik Karthigai or Karthigai Deepam?

Masik Karthigai is the periodical festivity of the festival “Karthigai Deepam”. For the month of August, the day of festivity is 27th. Karthikai Deepam or Karthikai vilakkidu is a Hindu particularly Tamils Festival of illumination. The festival is viewed in mainly of Hindu homes and each temple, and falls in the month of Karthikai i.e. mid-November to mid-December as per Tamil calendar.

 This happens on the day when the moon is in combination with the gathering with Karthigai (Pleiades) and Pournami. This collection comes into view as a group of six stars in the firmament in the form of a locket from the ear.

Story of six stars

Many tradition people and expressive poetry have grown-up around this star. The six stars are measured in Indian mythology as the six heavenly nymphs who raise the six babies in the saravana tank which afterwards were joined jointly to form the six faced Muruga. He is consequently called Karthikeya, the personification of lord Shiva as his second son after lord Ganesha.

 Some stories let know that lord shiva shaped Muruga from his third eye of six chief faces i.e. Tatpurusam, Aghoram,Sadyojatam,Vamadevam, Eesanam, Adhomukam. Another Story tells that the 6 forms made into six children and each of them carry up by the six Karthigai nymphs and afterwards amalgamated into one by his mother Parvati.

As the six nymphs assist in growing the six children, lord shiva holy immortality to the six nymphs as still living stars on the sky. Any worship carry out to these six stars is equal to worshiping lord muruga himself. They are worshiped by light up with rows of oil lamps (Deepam) in the dusk of the festival day about the houses and streets. Karthikai Deepam is also known as Kartikeya, or Muruga’s birthday.

History of Karthikai

One of the most primitive suggestions to the festival is originate in the Aganaanooru, a volume of poems, which dates back to the Sangam Age (200 B.C. to 300 A.D.). The Aganaanooru obviously states that Karthigai is famous on the full moon day (i.e., pournami) of the month of Karthigai, as per South Indian schedule. It was one of the mainly important festivals (peruvizha) of the very old Tamils, counting now the areas of present Kerala too.

 Avaiyyar, the well-known poetess of that era, refers to the festival in her songs. Karthikai Deepam is one of the oldest festivals celebrated by Tamil people. The festival finds the reference in Sangam narratives like Akanaṉūṟu and the poems of Auvaiyar.

Celebrations of Karthikai Festival

The festival of Karthigai Deepam is taking place with the rite of Bharani Deepam. The ritual of Bharami Deepam is pragmatic at 4 am of the day. The day following this ritual of Bharani Deepam is the instantaneous day before Karthigai Deepam. In the ceremony of Bharani Deepam, a lamp is light surrounded by the temple while the Bharani gatherings triumph. In most of the years, Bharani Deepam has been lit on the similar day of Kathigai Deepam at 4 am.

The light of Karthigai Deepam is light after sundown or an average of time 6pm. The flame of fire for the lamp of Karthigai is occupied from the lamp of Bharani Deepam as per ritual. Finally, in the evening, the flame is bringing to the top of a hill for lighting up Karthigai Maha Deepam.
Karthigai Deepam can also be mean as Karthikai Deepam. On the day of Karthigai Deepam, usual oil lamps are lit in temples, homes, streets and all over the place else probable. Special Pujas and associated spiritual events are prearranged at temples. Lighting lamp is representing the amity and affluence. This day is also known as Vishnu Deepam.

· This year “Karthigai Deepam” the festival of lights will be celebrated on the 25th of November 2015. However, Karthigai day is famous every month, this festival is devoted to the supreme Lord Shiva.

· Karthigai Deepam is celebrated on the full-moon day in the month of Karthigai, when the Karthigai nakshatra triumph during Ratrimana i.e. the time between sunset and sunrise.

· This festival is mostly celebrated by the Tamil community and is considered to be one of the oldest festivals.

· One of the many attractions of this festival is the impressive celebration held in Thiruvannamalai temple, Tamil Nadu, known as Karthikai Brahmotsavam.

· It is a ten days festival, celebrated with much spectacle and merriment. Thousands and thousands of devotees come to observer this stunning event every year.

· Another appeal of this festival is the lamps.

· Agal vilakku (clay lamps) symbolises Karthigai Deepam, all the houses in Tamil Nadu will be highlighted with these lamps throughout the month of Karthigai in 2015, this is one view you would not want to fail to spot.

· Many legends are connected with this festival, two of the most well-known of them are:

ü Fight for pre-eminence among the great trinity “Brahma-Vishnu-Maheshwara”

ü Birth of Lord Muruga also known as Karthikeyan, Subramanya, Shanmuga and a lot of more.

· It is believed that in the month of Karthigai, river Ganges link all the other rivers. Hence, bathing in river water, pond or lakes is supposed to be equivalent to bathing in the holy waters of Ganga.

Karthigai Deepam Event in Thiruvannamalai

The Annamalaiyar temple is one of the grandest and well-known temples in South India and one of its major appeals is the Karthigai Deepam celebrations. This is an impressive ten days celebration. It is taking place off with the flag hoisting known as Dwajarohanam, which point to the beginning of the festival. Each day of the 10 days festival, particular pujas and rituals will be carrying out in the temple, which catch the attention of thousands of devotees each year.


Then on the day of Karthigai Deepam, Bharani Deepam is light inside the temple building at 4 am in the morning. Later in the evening, the Maha Deepam is light on the top of the Annamalai Mountain from the blaze taken from the Bharani Deepam. To an observer, this spectacular event is a permission many would not want to miss. On every pournami day, thousands of devotees throng to this holy city to circumambulator the Annamalai Mountain which is extend of 14 kms to obtain the blessings of Lord Shiva.
